Ferndale makeup artist talks about her love for beauty

I’m Kgomotso Mabidikama, a makeup artist originally from Hammanskraal but now based in Ferndale.

Ferndale-based makeup artist Kgomotso Mabidikama dreams big.

Let me walk you through my makeup journey and how it all began. I’ve always enjoyed applying makeup on people and I began taking it seriously when I was 14 years old. I believe makeup was a cure for my low self-esteem since it made me feel better when I did it on other people.

I got interested in celebrities’ looks because I wanted to know how they applied makeup, and as a result, I started watching a lot of tutorial videos.

I graduated last year from Excellence Beauty Touch, where I was doing a makeup course; even though I went to school knowing how to do makeup, I guess I just wanted to be more perfect than ever.

Kgomotso Mabidikama also enjoys drawing besides being a make-up artist.

Before I went on to pursue my studies, I used to get a lot of comments from people on how beautiful my makeup is, and when others started asking me to do their makeup, I started charging them.

It would make me happy if I could put makeup on Nadia Nakai’s face, a well-known South African rapper because I’m madly in love with her, and the way her face beat suits her.

So far, my career as a makeup artist has been both joyful and challenging. I haven’t had a job in the beauty industry since I graduated last year; instead, I work for myself.

However, I am considering volunteering at beauty salons in order to gain more experience in the beauty sector.

Aside from doing face beats, I’m a hairstylist and I sketch since I enjoy working with my hands.

My long-term goals include working for big beauty businesses, doing makeup for television actors, and travelling the world.
