Witkoppen Clinic celebrated Mandela Day at Kya Sand with elderly people

Good Samaritans donate food and their time on Mandela Day.

The late struggle stalwart Nelson Mandela’s love for giving back to the community was revived on July 18, in Kya Sand where residents were presented with gifts and celebrating his birthday.

Witkoppen Clinic, together with SPAR Fourways Gardens, 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, celebrated the late icon’s birthday at Vukuzenzele Community Centre and donated 67 minutes of their time to locals who heeded the call and flocked to the centre.

Giving back to the community is what Sbonga Shange from the clinic’s business development section said they pride themselves on.

“The elderly have given so much to their community, from tirelessly raising grandchildren to ensuring the safety of the streets,” he said with an expression of pride on his face.

Shange pointed out that during the outbreak of the coronavirus, the clinic worked with the residents of the area by delivering vaccination doses, so it is therefore not surprising that they considered it fit to give back to one of the communities that have always supported them.

When addressing the crowd, he said, “You are the pillars of strength in this area, and we need to show our appreciation and respect to you.”

As a mark of appreciation for their contributions to the community, 50 elderly people were given food packages, clothing, toiletries, and scarves to keep them warm this winter.

Nonhlanhla Mosebi, the centre’s director, was pleased because they used to commemorate the day by focusing on children but not the elderly.

“It’s a great thing to show them love because they take care of our children and some don’t have parents, and they are looked after by their grandparents, so we saw the need to share what we have with them on this day.”

Residents were ecstatic with the gifts they were given and expressed words of thanks. Rosta Mashabane is one of them. “I’m very happy for what I got, as a result of this day, and it shows that there are people who care about us,” she said.

Christina Moemisi received gifts for the first time on Mandela Day, and she thanked the clinic for celebrating the day in their area.

Methodist Church and Genius Minds were among the other donors who helped make the day a success.
