Flavours clinched the 2023 5-a-side tournament
Nishaan Khishore said that the tournament was a huge success and he hopes next year it will be even bigger.
Eighteen teams competed in the Annual Charity Sports Tournament in honour of Mandela Day at Old Parks, Fast Sports Fusion 5-a-side fields.
The tournament was hosted by the NPO Infinity Charm Foundation. Founder Nishaan Kishore said that for them it is more than just soccer games – they are also about helping the community.
He explained that they combined annual sports events with Mandela Day to bring more people from all walks of life and unite through sports.
“We had 18 teams and 18 is the magical number for Mandela and the prize money in total was R18 000. This means a lot to us and the guys out there. We also had some soccer professionals coming to join our tournament, which is a highlight. We gave people lunch and refreshments and every team contributed R1 500.”
Flavour FC won the 2023 tournament by defeating Rams Attorney in the finals, and they took home R10 000. The runners-up (Rams Attorney) received R3 000.
Zwide Mhlongo of Flavour FC said that the games were really tough but they managed to adapt despite not starting in a good gear. “The chemistry was off at first and I made tough decisions and benched some players who had been with the team for some time. The moment we made the changes the team gained control and played good football.”
He added that they had been preparing for the games for a year and they also play together consistently week in and week out.
