Mabasa discusses South Africa’s education system

Mthokozisi Mabaso shares his thoughts on the education system in South Africa.

Mthokozisi Mxolisi Mabaso writes:

South Africa’s education system is a complex entity, with many challenges faced by students and educators alike. Despite government efforts to address the shortcomings in education over the past few decades, the system still has its pluses and minuses. In terms of positives, South Africa is a diverse country, and its education system reflects this in its curriculum.

The nation’s schools offer different languages for students to study and learn, which is a significant advantage that allows learners to communicate with different people and cultures. Another positive side of the education system is access, as South African schools are accessible and inclusive.

There is no discrimination when it comes to proceeding with education, and every child has the right to attend school. However, there are significant negatives to the system as well. One of the biggest challenges is funding, which has led to unequal education opportunities across the country.

Underfunding has resulted in inadequate school infrastructure, limited resources, a shortage of quality teachers, and a poor curriculum. These factors have directly impacted the quality of the education that students receive.

Additionally, despite not experiencing apartheid, South Africa’s education system still exhibits inequities. There is a disparity in the quality of education as well as academic resources between rural and urban areas. This difference has resulted in rural students being the most affected, and they end up receiving subpar schooling compared to urban learners. It is worth noting that many schools in disadvantaged rural areas lack essential resources like electricity, running water, and proper sanitation, making it more challenging to offer quality education.
