WATCH: Youth of Windsor learn an important lesson

According to Mathabo Bekimbia-Tchoffo, the event was a success, with a larger turnout than the previous one.

Painting in the Park, a Windsor Community Support Service (WCSS) Youth Month event, brought the youngsters together at Knights Avenue Park.

The day’s purpose was to educate young people and offer a safe environment for them. The kids enjoyed the treasure hunt. Every child who came to the event placed a paint hand print on the park wall.

The WCSS community liaison manager Mathabo Bekimbia-Tchoffo said that they chose the painting-in-the-park theme because Knights Avenue Park’s walls were covered with offensive graffiti.

“Kids play soccer at the park and were exposed to offensive language displayed on the walls. So I came up with the idea of wall mural that speaks to the youth and the whole community of Windsor. We wanted youth and kids to be part of this vibrant community wall mural. We want them to be responsible, respectful, accountable and understand the concept of Ubuntu.”

The park was cleaned and the walls painted in nice images. “We come up with a mural that is kids-friendly and that speaks to the community as a whole about the responsibility, respect, integrity, values, Ubuntu, accountability.”

“Murals create vibrant neighbourhoods that people want to visit and live in,” added Bekimbia-Tchoffo.
