Though Pet Connect has long hosted microchip and vaccination days in Hymany Park, Randpark Ridge – which residents and their pets from across the city flock to – little has been said about the free service the company provides.

Randpark Ridge resident Vanessa Fitzpatrick launched the Pet Connect app and website to help people find their furry friends who are lost, found or need a new home.

“I’ve been working in rescue and with dogs and pets now for nine years,” she said. “I have a passion for dogs. I have noticed in dealing with rescues and shelters across South Africa that one of the biggest problems when there is a lost or found pet, is that the person who has lost the pet is advertising it on a certain Facebook page and the person who found it might post on a different Facebook page or they might put it on a WhatsApp group, or they might take the dog to the vet but while that person took the dog to the vet, the owner looking at the SPCA, and this person has gone to a shelter and that person has posted it in the newspaper.”

She said the problem is people network in different places and communication needs to be centralised. The free app and website allow everyone to network in one place. The app and website are linked.

People can post a photo of the pet, the date it went missing or was found, its location, species, breed, and other information.
