Joburg Water finally fixes the three-month-old leaking valve

Jan Lottering said that he would have fixed it but it's against the law to fiddle with broken council property.

Joburg Water recently repaired a leaking council valve that had been causing damage to Bellairs Brooke Estate in Northriding for three months.

Estate manager Jan Lottering said that they reported the leaking valve feeding into their complex in mid-March and received a reference number on March 27.

“Joburg Water technicians were sent out a couple of days later. Several weeks went by with no repairs and we mailed them again only to get a new reference no. Then a couple of weeks went by and another team arrived finding the same problem.”

The leak was causing damage to the complex entrance as the valve is in the driveway.

“We are on a downhill slope therefore the leaking water is seeping into our complex causing damage to our driveway and erosion to our paving bricks.”

Joburg Water spokesperson Nolwazi Dhlamini said that the leak was caused by the aging of the infrastructure.

When asked why it took long to repair, she responded that it was because of the shortage of vehicles.

It was repaired on May 31. It takes approximately six hours for the team to conduct the repairs to the leaking valve.

She added that Johannesburg Water would do reinstatements on the area where the leak repairs were done.

The constant flow of water has seeped under the foundation of the building and the gardens on the other side were showing signs of rising water.

“This water is going to affect foundation work and could lead to structural problems. We have a river at the bottom end of our complex and the water table here is high most of the time. Now the constant flow of water for months does not drain away, and it is showing mushy lawns and a soon-to-be waterlogged garden.”
