Velocity strike twice to defeat Midrand United

Velocity U17 coach says that the league is tight with a lot of teams winning but the season is long and they will keep pushing.

After yet another great victory at home, Velocity Football Academy remains in second place on the U17 Rand Central League Football Association (RCLFA) log table.

Velocity made sure all three points remain at home in a hard-won 2-1 victory against Midrand United at Ferndale High School.

The home side applied pressure and pressed their opponents hard, forcing them to make mistakes.

The opening 45 minutes saw Velocity dominating possession and creating clear-cut chances but couldn’t find the back of the net. The visitors struggled to play their normal game and were kept in the game by their talented shot-stopper who made big saves.

It was one chance after another for the home side with long-range shots and one-on-ones with the keeper that failed to land.

Velocity could have wrapped up the game in the first half with four or five goals.

Aidan de Smidt, the home team’s coach, said that the chances they created during the whole game should’ve resulted in a higher scoreline.

“We played a great game and kept them at their own half a lot. This win was a definite booster for us in confidence.”

The second 45 minutes was a different game for both teams as the visitors showed aggression and took the game to the hosts.

Velocity midfielder Makha Mfaise broke the deadlock and put the home team ahead (1-0). As soon as the restart the motivated host pressed high and won the ball Wanagwa Banda long-range shot doubled their lead (2-0).

It became a big mountain to climb for the visitors but they managed to get a consolation goal (2-1) and kept the game alive and entertaining.

“We will be working on finishing our chances for our next game away to FC Real. We got to keep the same energy and it will be tough as most players are writing exams also good luck to them,” said de Smidt.
