Cosmo City’s talented sketch artist
Local artist shares his hopes and dreams with us.
Cosmo City pencil artist, Shawn Chauke writes:
I’m 23 years old. I like to sketch with a pencil and make lovely drawings.
It all started in high school when I became popular for my drawings and later in my community too. It felt like a dream come true for me since I wanted people to know what I’m doing.
I draw portraits and sometimes even on clothes as requested by people.
It’s been two years since I matriculated, and I have been applying to higher institutions to study fine arts, but I haven’t been admitted to any of the schools I applied to. However, that didn’t stop me from doing what I love: drawing and painting.
I’ve met with well-known artists that I have sketched, such as Sir Trill, an amapiano singer, and DJ Fresh in 2018, not forgetting DJ Maphorisa in 2021 at Jerusalem, one of the largest establishments in Cosmo City.
I remember Sir Trill calling me to the stage where he was performing after seeing the artwork I drew of him, and I couldn’t believe it was me while the audience took photos and videos. That was a big step for me.
I earn an income from my art and I want to expand my business, even though I sometimes feel like quitting due to a lack of support in my area, but something keeps whispering in my ear, ‘Think of why you started’. That’s what keeps me going.
My biggest dream is to open an art gallery and studio in my name, where I will sell and exhibit my artwork and make a brand for myself in my community.
