Northgate Ice Rink sees dancers raise funds for overseas trip

Dancers, their friends, family and the greater community show support as they prepare to perform overseas.

Local dancers raising money for an overseas event have thanked the community for their support at their ice-skating fundraiser at Northgate Ice Rink.

Thirteen girl dancers from J&C Dance Creations have been selected to participate in the American Dance Awards in the United States in July. Randpark Ridge resident Jodi Goodall is among a few Randburg locals in the group.

“The fundraiser was a success and everyone, big and small, had so much fun. Even some of the parents joined in on the fun,” she said, also thanking the venue for hosting them.

The group’s next fundraiser will be at the restaurant Smoke Daddy’s at Cedar Square on May 31, where a portion of the bill people pay for their meals, will go toward the dancers.

The competition the group has qualified for will be held in Rhode Island. “We also qualified in 2019 but unfortunately ADA Nationals 2020, scheduled to take place in Miami, was cancelled due to Covid-19.

Dancers Isabella Jansen van Vuuren and Courtney Thomas enjoy the fundraiser event.

“We continued to work hard through the pandemic, taking over living spaces for Zoom dance classes. I was devastated by the cancellation of the competition that I had aspired to compete in for many years. Since then, I’ve had to motivate myself to keep up the hard work and I am pleased that I now have the opportunity to fulfil that dream.” Jodi said she had continued to improve and felt confident her hard work would prevail.

“We are currently putting in countless hours of training in preparation for this big competition, but due to the cost of travel, accommodation, entry fees as well as our South African tracksuits, we are also making time to do fundraising.

“As a studio, we are also looking for sponsors for team bags and shirts.”
