Khula LGT organisation hosts spelling bee competition

Grade 8 to Grade 11 learners, from three different high schools, took part in the first-ever spelling competition.

Fallacious, anachronistic, ballyhoo, bicuspid, gimmicky, and quixotic were just some of the words learners had to spell at a recent spelling bee competition in Cosmo City.

Twenty-five learners from three schools competed in non-profit organisation Khula Let’s Grow Together’s (LGT) first-ever spelling bee challenge and fundraising event at the Multipurpose Centre on May 6. All sorts of awards and prizes were up for grabs.

High school pupils sit on the stage and are ready to show the hall their spelling capabilities.

Hlengiwe Ntamane, the founder of the NPO, said the competition was aimed at promoting educational activities and offering learners a platform to improve their literacy.

“Promoting learning is one of the things that we aim to do and lend a helping hand to the teachers and parents in our community.”

The contestants were 13 pupils from Far North Secondary School, seven from Boipuso Comprehensive School, and five from Meridian Cosmo City High School.

Patrick Komanha, a Grade 9 pupil from Meridian Cosmo City School took the 1st runner-up and the 2nd runner-up was Anele Buthelezi, a Grade 11 learner from Far North Secondary School.

Contestants are excited after a successful spelling bee competition hosted in Cosmo City.

The winners won a trophy, award certificates from Khula LGT, voucher from Sun International for a two-night stay at The Maslow Hotel in Sandton, R200 voucher from Just Shoes, voucher from Ice Rink, and a voucher from DM Creationz for an hour of photography.

The NGO plans to host sanitary towels donation and a school shoe drive with the money raised from the event and give back to the community.

The founder of Khula Let’s Grow Together (LGT), Hlengiwe Ntamane, opens the event by welcoming all people inside the hall.

All of this was possible through the sponsorship of Pick n Pay Qualisave, Karisan it, Postnet Dainfern, Sun International, Ice Rink Northgate, DM Creationz, LM Designs, and Just Shoes.
