Spark Cresta gives learners voting experience

Spark Cresta learners and parents were given a taste of voting when the school celebrated Freedom Day

Learners were given a taste and feel of what many black South Africans experienced on April 27, 1994 a famous day in South African history now known as Freedom Day

The school organised a voting station for the learners, exactly the same as during government elections.

Learners stand in long queues, excited to cast their votes on what event the school should organise for them at the end of the fourt term.

They had to vote for their favourite among four ‘candidates’: Market Day, Movie Day, Talent Show and the Carnival Show.

Principal Job Bonsu said they decided to commemorate the day as it was the first democratic elections.

“We wanted them to see how voting is done in the real world and in doing so, we were teaching them about their human rights and responsibilities.”

The learners experienced it all at the school voting station. From ID check, ink on the thumb to the ballot boxes with teachers acting as Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) officials.

Parents were also invited to vote and share the experience with the learners.
