An organised walk encourages the youth of Zandspruit to exercise

The purpose of the parade was to change how people see Zandspruit, said Ward 114 councillor David Mangena.

Ward 114 councillor David Mangena led a fun walk at Emthonjeni Community Centre in Zandspruit, on March 31. The aim of the event was to encourage residents to live a healthy lifestyle and work together.

The purpose the 5km stroll was to teach residents the importance of exercise and introduce the first-ever community awards. The awards are aimed at recognising people who are making a difference in the community.

“It was a reminder to the residents to stay healthy and to announce local awards which will acknowledge volunteers, top performing learners and local business owners who lend a helping hand in the neighbourhood.”

Motshidisi Matsididi, Athabiso Rawutini and Puleng Mallane are elated after the fun walk.

Community members will receive awards, certificates and assistance in finding jobs during the first-ever local awards ceremony, which is scheduled for the end of November.

“I really believe that the rewards will empower them to make a tremendous impact in the area. I want them to work together and compete in creating positive things around them,” Mangena continued.

The walk saw old and young residents gather at the community centre and take to the Zandpruit’s streets to socialise.

“It was fun for me because I enjoy sports a lot. I used to run in both middle and high school and I was always first,” recalled Lizzy Motlhapi (50) who uses exercising to manage her high blood and diabetes.

Maletsatsi Moloi (42) who spends most of her time at home glued to her cellphone said, “The parade was fantastic because I spend most of my time at home doing nothing and I am glad that I’ve excised a bit and got to engage with the councillor.”

According to 20-year-old Shari Douman, who wants to lead by example in her community, “I’ve managed to meet with my primary school classmates because of this leisure stroll and I’m looking forward to taking part in the community and offering extra classes to matriculants.”

Following the wonderful parade, participants received refreshments and food.
