10 disabled members of wheelchair basketball club gets new uniform

Good Samaritans donate new basketball attire for a group of disabled young men from Cosmo City.

Wheels Life’s wheelchair basketball team’s wish to receive new uniforms was granted on March 25, when Choice Butchery at Cosmo City Shopping Centre presented them with brand-new attire. This will allow them to participate in tournaments.

The 10 disabled members of the squad are eager to prove to the public that you can do anything despite having a disability.

Coach Paul Moyo said, “I would like to thank Choice Butchery and other people who made this possible, and to continue helping others.”

The new uniform means a lot to them because they we were not expecting it at all.

Thato Makale, the 23-year-old founder and player of the team, said he wants to see the wheelchair basketball squad grow in the township.

“We started with three people and we want to grow as some of us disabled people are stuck indoors, because of the fear of what people will say.”

Another player, Sandile Mndebele (20), told Randburg Sun,” Our new kit looks really good and now that we got it the public can expect great performance from us.”

It would not have been possible without the intervention of Roger Manavhela, secretary of Sanco in Cosmo City, who knocked on almost all the doors in the township asking for assistance.

“I feel so proud that I managed to help this group as many people are not willing to offer a helping hand to disabled people.”

Sponsor of the team and manager of Choice Butchery, Roger de Castor said, “We were very touched by the needs of the group. Since last year, we have been offering them monthly food vouchers as they said they don’t have anything to eat when attending tournaments.”

De Castor advised the team to continue working hard and follow their dreams, because nothing is impossible.

The club will play on April 15, in a provincial club championship league at Mandeville indoor club centre.

The team is in need of assistance:

The group has been invited to the United Kingdom by High Rollers wheelchair basketball team to spend two to three weeks in the summer in Chelmsford, Essex, to train with them and learn a few things about wheelchair basketball.

Only accommodation will be offered by the High Rollers team. To sponsor the group with a flight to the UK, you can send an email to wheelslife99@gmail.com
