Northriding resident Megan Couchman calls load-shedding one of our youth’s greatest challenges

Northriding resident has to go to friends to work when the power is out for days.

Northriding resident, Megan Couchman comments:

I think one of the greatest challenges facing young people at the moment is load-shedding as well as unplanned power outages.

The other week we were without power from Monday until Thursday because there was load-shedding and then power could not be restored for a long time.

It ruined so much food that was in my fridge.

I work from home and many professionals like me have had to make arrangements.

Solar power and inverters are expensive or not an option for most people, and I am renting. I do not own my own place, so I am not allowed to install solar panels.

Thankfully I have been able to go to friends when there has been no power for days, to do my work.

The ideal solution would be to find alternative means of generating more power for the public, as alternative options are also too expensive for most people.

But the lack of electricity pushes the price of everything up and people struggle more, which also means less demand. It’s a vicious cycle.
