One of the most wanted men in Gauteng is now behind bars after attempting to evade police by using a false name.
The fingerprints of the man have been linked to more than 100 house robberies in the past eight years, said Honeydew Police Station media liaison Warrant Officer Dave Stanton
In October last year, a team consisting of Gauteng Police’s Serious and Violent Crime Investigation unit, Johannesburg police’s K9 unit, Fairland police, Crime Intelligence and CAP Security initiated an investigation into a house robbery syndicate operating in the northern suburbs of Joburg.
The team was able to arrest three suspects in November, recovering a firearm and a stolen vehicle.
“During the arrest, a shoot-out ensued between the police and suspects which resulted in the prime suspect being critically wounded. He was taken to hospital under police guard. During this time, he provided authorities with a false name, which coupled with his injuries, delayed the process of identification. Later his fingerprints came back from forensic services revealing his true identity and confirming that he is one of the police’s most wanted suspects.”
The suspect has since been denied bail and he remains in custody.
