Sponsor a child at Oasis Haven

Children's home has 10 boys and 10 girls in its care at any given time. This is how it has been for 22 years.

A children’s home in Robin Hills is asking the community to come forward and sponsor children in need.

Oasis Haven has a home for 10 boys in Bou Avenue and a home for 10 girls in Winston Avenue.

These youngsters are somewhere between three months of age and finishing high school, all abandoned by their parents or taken from unsuitable living environments by the court.

For R200 a month, sponsors will receive a non-identifying photo of the child they sponsor, a piece of art done by the child, an update every six months, and a Section 18A receipt for tax deduction.

This is all the home is asking, despite the cost of providing for each child being between R10 000 and R15 000 per month.

The home provides food and lodging, education, medication, therapy and emotional support.

There are also outings and experiences that restaurants, venues and groups provide to the children.

The homes even have their own extensive playgrounds, libraries and board games rooms.

There is tight security, with CCTV footage from several cameras.

“It has been 22 years since Oasis Haven opened its doors to our first baby. As I look back on our journey, it gives me a great sense of pride and satisfaction about what we have accomplished,” said the home’s managing director, Beverley Beukes.

“There have been tremendous successes and also occasional setbacks. However, we have always focused on one thing: Doing the best for every single child that has come through our doors.”

She said the great provision from donors has allowed them to feel equipped to face the challenges the rest of the year has in store, which includes load-shedding and a tough economic climate.

“We have built excellent teams in both our boys’ and girls’ family homes and have grown our social work team to three social workers with support staff in what we believe are all the right areas. We are continuously improving our culture and work environment, thus creating opportunities for professional and personal growth for our existing employees.”

She said the theme of the year is ‘Together we can’.
