World Read Aloud Day celebrated with gusto at Risidale Primary School

From engaging in fun activities during the day, Grade 6 learners also took home the trophy after beating their rivals in fierce competition at Blackheath Library.

World Read Aloud Day was celebrated with gusto at Risidale Primary School last week with learners in all grades participating in fun and engaging activities.

A competition was organised by the City of Johannesburg in conjunction with the Blackheath Library which saw Grade 6 learners compete in various reading-related competitions. Risidale Primary took home the overall trophy after excelling in reading tasks and various spelling bees. These included rephrasing and punctuating an extract of stories they read, The Little Prince and Esio Trot.

Cassidy Chauke came second in her spelling bee and Patricia Mpoyi came third after several rounds of testing.

The school thanked Grade 6 English teacher Lindiwe Mmekoa for winning the trophy with her learners and to all parents for their ongoing dedication to helping their children thrive at school with ongoing at-home learning.

At the school, Grade 4 and 5 learners made themselves lovely bookmarks, the Grade 6 and 7 classes read to foundation phase children and Grade 4 and 5 learners listened to audiobooks in the school hall.

During the day, various ‘stop, drop and read’ activities were planned where learners had a blast suddenly stopping whatever activity they were doing and had to read for five minutes.

A book club was also formed by some Grade 7s which will go a long way to keeping reading front and centre of their schooling in a safe and fun environment.
