Be cautious when using online dating apps, and verify the identities of people you go on dates with

Request photos of dates with specific facial expressions or places to ensure stolen online images are not being used by criminals.

Linden police are urging people to be careful when using the online dating app Grinder.

Last year a case of rape and robbery was opened after a victim met with a date at a guest house where the crimes were committed. The suspects were arrested after a case was opened at the station.

Recently another case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm was opened in which the complainant alleged that when he went to meet the person he had been talking to on the app, he was attacked by several men.

Sergeant Takalani Sibiya, spokesperson for Linden Police said, “The victim went to the bathroom, and when he re-entered the bedroom he was confronted by three men who had been hiding in a wardrobe. One man was wielding a black gun and another a knife which was used to stab the victim who sustained serious injuries.
“A fight broke out and during the struggle a glass door was smashed which the complainant used to escape the scene. None of his belongings was stolen and he was treated at Milpark Hospital for his injuries.”

The police are appealing to users of the app to approach potential dates with caution.

“Verify the profile pictures before going on a date by asking the person to send a photo with a particular facial expression or location to ensure a picture sent to them is of an actual person and not stolen online images.”

She also advised people not to over-share personal information with strangers online such as where you live and work. Don’t send any sensitive images. It is also advised that when you meet someone for the first time, do it in a public place.

“If you have any doubts about the person you are talking to, rather end the conversation.”
