Clothing brand generosity to assist Lighthouse Baby Shelter in Sundowner

Rookie USA gives back to the community by giving gifts and R50 000 cheque to the Lighthouse Baby Shelter based in Sundowner, Randburg on January 21.

The Rookie USA is a clothing brand that houses five children’s brands including Nike, Jordan, Convers, Hurley and Levis kids.

Marketing manager Teboho Motlhamme explained that it was an important day for Rookie USA. “It’s a special day because we get to give back. We work with influencers on a month-by-month basis for the entire year. Instead of asking for remuneration, they have opted not to be remunerated.”

“The money that we would normally give them throughout the year we put it all together. We choose a home where we donate that money hoping that we can give them something small to take them through the year so that they able to purchase supplies that they need to make things a little easier for them,” she added.

Motlhamme said that they look around for different homes to see what their needs are. “Rookie is a kids’ brand with different brands from 0-16 so we wanted to make sure that we cater to a home that looks after kids in that category.”

The founder of the Lighthouse Baby Shelter Eleanor Dustan said, “I am very grateful to Rookie USA and the staff that came to donate to us. It’s a wonderful blessing to all of us. Today is very special because when people come to visit the children is always special to them because they don’t have families. When outside people come and share with these abandoned kids is always special to me also.”

“We do not get support from the government so any financial help that we get is a great help. We have 14 children and it’s a normal household and it cost a lot to run the place,” added Dustan.

Dustan further explained that all the finance will go towards the children’s education. “Education whether its government or private you still have to pay. There are still a lot of expenses for the children, and I am hoping to put some money aside for their tertiary education as well. These kids will benefit hugely from today’s initiative.”

Motlhamme added that the money donated will make a huge impact on the Lighthouse baby shelter children. “They will be able to use it for school fees, and uniforms, and also it will help run the place as food and electricity are expensive.”

The lighthouse baby shelter was established in 2008 and has had about over 200 children come through the shelter.
