Crime and load-shedding affects everyone, even sports people – Randburg Cricket Club team captain

The captain of the Presidents A League team discusses how the cricket club has been affected by load-shedding and crime recently.

Linden resident, Cornel Eksteen comments:

Even local cricket clubs have been hit hard by crime and load-shedding in recent months, and years.

At Randburg Cricket Club, where I captain the Presidents A League side, our front gate was stolen, and people have had their cars stolen in the past.

We had to raise funds to lift security so we can feel safe while on the field.

We have a boom with spikes and a guard who lets people onto the property now.

Load-shedding is also a problem for us because the staff at the clubhouse cannot prepare food for the players when there is no electricity.

Also, the draught machine needs electricity, and our fridges need to keep the drinks cool.

Sports clubs all over the country have similar issues right now.

Still, I would encourage people to join our club.

I have been here for five years because it is the closes club for me, living in Linden.

We are very welcoming, and you will never feel like an outsider here.

We have a proud, successful history and have a number of women’s players currently representing the country in the U19 world cup.
