Regional accelerated service delivery operational plan for Kya Sands Informal Settlement

Region C’s Regional Director holds Walkabout to address and fix law enforcement problems.

In an effort to resolve issues in Region C, Regional Director Mlamleli and Ward 134 Councillor Devon Steenkamp conducted a Walkabout to fix outstanding backlogs in Kya Sands Informal Settlement of potholes, illegal dumping, City Power issues, and more on October 5.

The Regional Director and ward councillor were joined by members of the City of Johannesburg’s various departments and entities such as; Pikitup Randburg, Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA), Johannesburg Water, City Power, environmental health, Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), Economic Development, social development and building control.

Ward 134 Councillor Devon Steenkamp explained the Kya Sand Informal Settlement had been hit hard with punches of service delivery challenges, so there was a big backlog but it was good that the City was coming together to tackle small parts at a time so that the challenges could be less impactful on the residents and the business owners that were staying in that area.

“There are potholes, there’s a high unemployment rate, electricity issues, and massive illegal dumping taking place. It’s great to see that the City and the region have come together to try and tackle and assist because the little effort of picking up litter shows the small difference that makes their lives easier for them.”

Steenkamp added doing outreach programmes for these informal settlements that were also in that area would help as a lot of them were looking for job opportunities.

“I am glad to hear that there are going to be some programmes from the Economic Development partner that is also going to come and bring opportunity buses to the area to help register SMEs, and job seekers to collect that database because it hasn’t been collected previously.”

He said he was glad to hear of the plans moving forward and thanked the various departments and entities assisting the community’s cries for help.
