Vhuhwavho Nems pulls off the sheets to mirror her world as a female creative

In a world filled with endless possibilities, this young supernova creative continues to work towards her dreams.

Vhuhwavho Nems (stage name Trexpas) writes:

I am a singer, songwriter, painter, and animation student at The Animation School.
I am a Randburg-based artist, born in 2002 and raised in Centurion.

I was drawn to music at an early age. I always had a natural affinity for art and music. I honed my craft at the National School of the Arts in Braampark where I studied fine arts for a year then transitioned to home school.

I fell in love with music as a young girl listening to my uncle and his band in my grandmother’s house. I was introduced to jazz, soul and psychedelic rock. Great musicians such as Lira, D’angelo, and Anita Baker left an immense impression on me and my approach to performing.

The greatest part of my music career thus far was performing at Yams (You Are My Sunday) and meeting Bridget Pike. It was my first time performing and met a lot of artists such as myself. I found a home there.

My biggest challenge has been balancing art, animation and music. I love them all equally like they were my children. And like children, they require different things from me at different times.

I’ve overcome this by incorporating all my talents into everything I do, not allowing myself to be boxed in by one profession and never comparing my progress to my peers or those who came before me but learning from them instead.

My advice to my peers is ‘handle your business’. Although we are passionate, talented and having fun, we still need to eat. So monetise your art, learn how to budget, learn about taxes, learn about investing and create consistent cash flow. That’s the only way you can continue to do what you love.

I hope to teach people to be more sensual, passionate, and ardent about life’s journeys. To enjoy life and to create more.

Lastly, I want to say I appreciate the role of journalists, photographers, promoters and event planners who help us, artists, to showcase our creations, giving us a platform to be ourselves and connect with the world.
