Tammy Gregor who is an animal behaviourist at the Randburg SPCA has written a poem expressing the agony of bidding farewell to animals that they have grown to love and built a bond with.
Tammy Gregor writes:
I wonder if you know that I had to put your dog down today
The one that you dropped at us and walked away
You had your reasons as to why you couldn’t stay
Why you couldn’t be with them on their final day?
You said you hoped I could find them a home
You were sorry to leave them here all alone
And with this, you walked away, and with us, they got to stay
It took some time to become the best of friends
They didn’t always understand why their old life stopped and this one begins
Sadly, it was such a short adventure, but one that I was privileged to be in together
So, for all of you that left your animal behind
Please know I loved them as if they were mine.
