Several challenges and assessments were completed leading up to the finale. Contestants were required to conceptualise and cook a three-course menu. The finalists were full-time students and were chosen as semi-finalists based on their practical and theoretical performance during their studies thus far.
Stephen Billingham who is the managing director and owner of the school and former president of the South African Chefs Association reminded the students that the night was about them.

“It’s not easy to put yourself in this arena to be watched closely, to be judged, to be poked, to be criticised by people’s comments – negative and positive – the cuts, the burns, the bruises, the stress, the anxiety, all leading up to tonight. However, as I’ve always said, as of now and tomorrow, every one of you is better today than you were yesterday.”

Elizabeth Ncube is the winner of the 2022 HTA Legacy Competition.

Billingham added those were all fundamentals that would make the students global leaders in the culinary profession for the rest of their working careers.

Principal of the school Carien van Tonder said, “We witness and celebrate seven second-year students who were kicked out of their nest of comfort and complacency to do something great. Whoever’s endured the pressure of being on display while cooking their hearts out through commitment and dedication today, literally will stand out above the rest.”

After the different speakers congratulated the students on their hard work that evening, the winner was finally announced.

The winner of the 2022 HTA Legacy Competition was Elizabeth Ncube. She received a generous cash prize and gifts from this year’s sponsors.
