Bordeaux resident Edith Aspeling celebrates her 100th birthday

The Garden Village community along with the centenarian’s family memorialise her life.

Edith Aspeling celebrated her 100th birthday at the Methodist Home Garden Village on August 27.

Aspeling’s friends, family as well as some staff from Garden Village gathered to honour and memorialise this beautiful milestone that Aspeling had reached.

Hers son, Dave, began the heartfelt celebration by firstly giving a vote of thanks to everyone who had come out to attend and support and show love at his mother’s 100th birthday party.

Dave said, “My mom’s been an inspiration to many, many people; three generations within the family. I think one of the remarkable aspects of her 100 years is that she has adapted to an incredible, quick and changing environment and landscape that she can cope with what she experienced from 1922 to 2022 on a political, ideological and economic level – every single level.”

He added that his mother has remained so positive and open and participative, and her courage to embrace has been phenomenal and has been an inspiration to all of them to be positive all the time.

The Methodist Home Garden Village manager Ursula Coster said, “For me and the village Edith is grace; she is the kind of person that always makes you smile She is kind and she is the epitome of kindness. Sometimes you say that some people are kind but with her, it’s not because she gives as she does give generously, but it’s more she gives of herself.”

Coster emphasised how she had never heard Aspeling say a bad word about anybody, as she had been working at the village for over a year.

“She is incredibly brave, she is getting frailer, but when you ask her how she is she’ll say, ‘I’m fine. I’m here’.”

She said it was even more remarkable because we always assume that people may lose the ability to speak or to think and have memories but Aspeling was nothing like that.

“Edith has an incredibly good memory, she is a vital part of our village life. She is always here for all the socials and that’s Edith; it’s grace.”
