WATCH: Metro police inspect site of land invasion in Randburg

Makeshift dwellings spring up in open veld next to the N1 highway.

Police and Metro police recently conducted a site visit where an apparent land invasion was taking place on the border of Olivedale, Meadowhurst and Ferndale.

This is in open veld next to the N1 highway, between Jacaranda Avenue and Malibongwe Drive.

Some makeshift dwellings and piles of recycling waste are now in the veld.

Ward 101 councillor Ralf Bittkau takes a photo over his shoulder of the recycling waste in the open veld.

Ward 101 councillor Ralf Bittkau joined the police officials hoping it will lead to the removal of the illegal residents later.

“Today we had a fact-finding visit and a calm interaction with about 200 out of 350 people illegally invading the land,” he said.

“They are mainly undocumented foreigners from Lesotho and recyclers, however, there is booze, drugs, women and children as well as a criminal element amongst them. This is the first step towards removing them from this land.”

About 350 people have made homes for themselves in the open veld. Metro Police addressed them during the site visit.

He said he was shocked this had occurred and had taken a video during the site visit which can be seen here:

Questions were sent to Metro police spokesperson Xolani Fihla, and his comments will be published when they are made.

This is a developing story.
