Joburg district bowls shine in masters’ tournament in Morningside

The district’s very best bowlers gave it their best at the recent Johannesburg Bowls Association’s Masters Singles tournament.

The Johannesburg Bowls Association’s (JBA) Perfect Delivery Masters Singles was a phenomenal success with a high stand of bowls on display.

The district’s best bowlers came together on the weekend of August 13 at Morningside Country Club to battle it out in the men’s, women’s, veteran men’s and veteran women’s sections.

According to JBA president Rob Zimmerman, this prestigious tournament is held annually for the best singles players in the district.

“The masters singles tournament showcases the very best that the district has to offer all in one event.”

This year’s masters tournament had six Proteas among the men’s and women’s open sections.

He added that the bowlers in each section were equally competitive, which in turn helps to keep the overall competition strong.

At the end of the weekend, Bryanston Sports Club’s Victor Siphali was victorious in the men’s open, taking the gold medal while Belgravia Bowling Club’s James Galloway took home the silver.

In the women’s open, Belgravia Bowling Club’s Jax van Rensburg took home the gold while Linden Bowling Club’s Esmé Haley took the silver, with a second place finish.

Johan Crafford and Constant Steyn from Roosevelt Bowls Club respectively took the gold and silver in the veteran men’s category. In the veteran women’s section, Bedfordview Bowling Club’s Kathy Venter took the gold while Heather Pembroke of Linden Bowling Club took home the silver.

The association also hosted its annual awards presentation and prize-giving on the weekend to celebrate not only the results of the masters tournament but also a number of seasonal achievements.

“It has been a great year for the district as a whole and we look forward to taking on new ventures and challenges in the upcoming season,” said Zimmerman.
