Seren House Cottage School’s young drama production team performed The Jungle Book for their first ever audience at the Nederduits Hervormde Genentech Randburg Church on July 11.
The play is about a boy whose father is killed while travelling through the jungle and is brought up by wolves. It features mainly animal characters and the bad guy is a tiger named Shere Khan who does not like this ‘boy cub’ living in the jungle. The principal characters are the ‘boy cub’ named Mowgli and Shere Khan.
Professional actor, writer and industrial theatre specialist Matthew Ribnick performed with the primary school production learners.
“We invited some small schools and people from an old age home [Silver Stream Village] to come to watch the kids perform and also for the kids to also feel what it is like to have an audience because the kids are not used to performing in front of an audience,” said Ribnick.
“They have got to get used to the audience reaction when they are clapping or laughing.”
The audience loved the play and were left with smiles on their faces.
Silver Stream Village coordinator Nonhlahla Mabuza said the grannies enjoyed the play.
“It was a nice play and most importantly we had fun watching the kids perform,” said Mabuza.
