Man electrocuted in Bordeaux substation, leaves area without power

City Power believes the man had been trying to steal copper bits and cables.

A man died of electrocution at a transformer substation, leaving parts of Bordeaux without electricity on August 15.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said technicians responded to an outage in the area to find an unknown man dead inside the transformer substation on the corner of Main Avenue and Republic Road.

“The victim had broken into a transformer substation… [and] vandalised it in what looks like an attempt to steal copper bits and cables,” Mangena explained.

“The team was forced to isolate the substation while waiting for authorities including the police to clear the scene and remove the body. Several customers in Bordeaux and the surrounding areas were left without power for most of the evening as the police were busy on-site.”

Power was restored later and Mangena apologised to the community for the inconvenience caused.
