Linden SAPS and Infrastructure Team successfully arrest a copper thief

The Linden Police and Infrastructure Team encourage the community to continue to report suspicious activities in their area.

On July 13, members of the Infrastructure Team, supervised by Captain E S D Patrick, successfully arrested a male suspect for the possession of two bundles of compacted copper, suspected to be stolen at a location in Fontainebleau.

The arrest followed an insightful lead from the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) concerning the sale of copper within the Windsor area. “During the interrogation of the suspect at the Linden Police Station, he informed the team of the location where he had obtained the copper,” said communication officer of Linden Police Station Sergeant Takalani Sibiya.

She said Linden police officials went to a property in Fontainebleau where they discovered an additional 98 bundles of compacted copper with an estimated value of R950 000. “Members of the DPCI were called to the scene and identified the goods as possibly stolen during a recent business robbery in the Springs policing area.”

Linden police conducted an additional investigation of the property and found skulls – which were later identified as lion skulls. Sibiya added that two female occupants were arrested on-site for contravening the National Environmental Management Act: Biodiversity Act – dealing in endangered species.

“The three detained suspects will appear in court soon.”

The copper found was conclusively linked to a business robbery case that occurred in the Springs area recently. Further investigation continues and possible additional arrests are imminent.
