Knights Preparatory School learners learn about safety

The SAPS in Gauteng along with other special police, EMS, and several entities strive to impact learners through their provincial Safer Schools Campaign.

The pre-school learners of Knights Preparatory School, Kensington B, were overjoyed to receive a visit from Emergency Management Services (EMS) and other entities as part of the Safer Schools Campaign on August 2.

The learners were given informative demonstrations by members of the Randburg Police Station, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department, EMS, Gauteng Provincial Government, Netcare Life as well as other stakeholders.

Randburg Police Station spokesperson Captain Makgowanyana Maja said the Safer Schools Campaign was targeted at increasing the learners’ level of awareness on various serious topics to ultimately ensure all children were safe and felt safe within their school environment.
Maja said the topics that would be discussed throughout the campaign included general safety, road safety, dangers of narcotics, bullying, sexual offences, and water and fire safety.

“The Knights Pre-School children will soon be learning about ‘people who help us’ so we decided that bringing the Emergency Management Services in for a display would help them better understand the pivotal roles these services play in our communities,” said Knights Preparatory School marketing coordinator Catherine Natali.

Natali said the children interacted with all the members of the entities and learnt more about what each entity did.

She added that the EMS members answered all the learners’ queries and used the children to help them with demonstrations which included water safety, fire safety, road safety, numbers to call for assistance etc.

“I believe every child needs to learn and understand that the EMS is there to help. Too many children are taught that no one is there to assist them when in reality, we have a surplus of members ready to go above and beyond their call of duty to assist their communities. The children learnt that these entities are not ‘scary’ and only want us all to be safe.”
The Knights Preparatory School community were grateful for all who were involved and extended a special thanks to Colonel Paulus van Eerden and Captain Makgowanyana Maja for organising the special event.
