As incidents of vehicle theft and theft out of vehicles continue to rise, the South African Police Service is urging vehicle owners to take extra precautions.
In a recent safety awareness alert, the police service outlined safety tips for motorists when driving and/or parking their vehicles.
Motorists are encouraged to:
- Avoid parking their vehicles where there are no security officers or car guards present.
- Make sure that all of the doors and windows, and boot are properly closed and locked.
- Always close your windows when driving in the city centre.
- Do not open your windows for hawkers along the road or at an intersection.
- When driving, keep the doors locked and your windows closed at all times.
- Avoid displaying anything valuable such as a handbag, briefcase, watch, cellphone or laptop in full view on the seats. Instead, lock your valuables in the boot of your vehicle.
- Familiarise yourself with your route prior to embarking on your trip.
- Always be vigilant and observe your area. If you notice something suspicious when parking your vehicle, report it to security or the centre management.
