Volunteers improve Delta Park

Users group removes hyacinth from dams, paves areas and cuts brush in local park.

Residents have been taking it upon themselves to improve Delta Park.

The Delta Park Users Group has been working hard for years and is funded by community members who utilise the park.

Shirley Tebbutt, who runs the Delta Park User Group and writes its regular newsletter, said since her last newsletter, workers paved the area at the pedestrian gate at the bottom of Bantam Drive.

“It was very successful. The huge puddle drained away as planned and has stayed dry even with the heavy rains,” she said.

“City Parks mowed the grass where the ground wasn’t marshy but twice the mowers had to be pulled out of the mire. I don’t need to remind you of the explosion of giant blackjacks that tried to cover the park”

Jozi Trails offered to do brush cutting after working hours and on weekends.

Tebbutt said many walkers employed them for a day’s work plus petrol, so the paths they used and slightly beyond, were kept clear.

“It saved their dogs from returning home looking like spiky hedgehogs and sometimes wet from a swim as well – a nightmare,” Tebbutt added.

“The Rotary Club employed them to do two days of brush cutting at the Sensory Garden (next to the Environmental Centre). Then the Rotary members cleared out the flower beds. It looks so much better now.”
