Cosmo schools sports day aims to keep children away from crime

Leaners in Cosmo City fight against gangsterism using sport as their shield.

In a quest to end gangsterism in Cosmo City schools, police hosted a sports day to keep learners away from crime.

With gangsterism identified as a problem in Cosmo City schools, Honeydew Police Station and the local crime desk spent a day with learners from different secondary schools in the community to improve the avoidance of unlawful activities in schools.

Station spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan said the goal of the day was to encourage learners to consider their options outside gang membership. “I do not believe if we have children that are playing football and netball like this, we [will] have children that are gangsters in schools. They are not gangsters, but they are children, and they just need to be loved a little bit more.

“This day was made to make sure our children do not go in the direction of committing a crime in the community.”

He added that the learners needed to know that there is more to be done than going towards committing a crime.

According to the school coordinator and CPF Kgomotso Lethoko, pupils should invest in and use their skills and talents to resist the lure to join gangsterism in schools.
