Hijacking ‘victim’ becomes suspect

Honeydew police arrests a victim for car hijacking.

A 29-year-old man is expected to appear at the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on charges of theft of a motor vehicle and perjury.

Honeydew Police Station Warrant officer Michael Erasmus said the man claimed under oath that his car had been hijacked. “The suspect had lied under oath that the vehicle he had reported hijacked was his, meanwhile he sold the car he rented for transporting for R30 000 and lied about the whereabouts of the car being involved in a car accident,” said Erasmus.

According to Erasmus, the suspect was arrested for theft of the motor vehicle and lying under oath after the owner of the vehicle reported it stolen. “Detectives recovered the vehicle in Zanspruit. The suspect [who claimed to be] a victim of the hijacking was subsequently arrested and will be appearing in Roodepoort Court.”
