Pipe burst on Conrad Drive damages pavement and parking area outside shops

Old asbestos cement pipes are breaking all over Blairgowrie and Bordeaux.

A recent burst water pipe has damaged the pavement and parking area outside of shops on Conrad Drive.

Ward 102 councillor David Potter explained that it is the same old story of old asbestos cement (AC) pipes breaking in the cold weather.

“[Johannesburg Water’s] depot team is aware of the ongoing bursts,” he said.

“Reinstatements take time to get done. Full pipe replacements are years away.”

Joburg Water’s acting communications manager Seipati Nyawuza said she was waiting for information from the entity’s team on the ground before commenting on the burst pipe on Conrad Drive.

Randburg Sun will publish her comments when they are made.

Potter explained that a water pipe replacement project is also under way in Forbes Road, Blairgowrie.

“This project remains incomplete with many delays and is fraught with challenges. The repair of water pipes often results in damage to pavements and roads which then requires necessary reinstatement. As of February this year, Joburg Water has appointed its own reinstatement contractors and are seemingly in more control of the reinstatement process.”

This related to Joburg Roads Agency, which was mostly closed from March 2020 to February 2022, and has 5 000 reinstatements in its backlog, Potter said, though this does not stop him championing infrastructure upgrades.

AC pipes have been bursting all over Randburg, with Potter saying his ward, and specifically Bordeaux and Blairgowrie, are heavily affected.
