Former managing director of Engen, Sarel Steyn died at the age of 92.
The Robindale resident and former managing director and chairperson of the Exol group passed away on June 30.
His funeral service was held on July 8 among the Randburg South Dutch reformed congregation.
A statement from his family described him as a successful businessman who was also actively involved in the Randburg community.
Steyn was involved in the petroleum industry for 63 years where he worked at Total and Trek Petroleum (Later Engen), among others. He was both the managing director of Trek Petroleum and the CEO of Trek Investments.
In his life, he was honoured by the Randburg City Council for outstanding achievement in the business world.
His involvement in arts and culture includes his service as patron of the Eisteddfod and SA Amateur Wrestling Federation and senior management of the Federasie van Afrikaanse Kultuurvereniginge.
In his last years, he was still actively involved with Exol group as a director and majority shareholder.
Steyn’s association with Exol oil refinery goes back as far as the 1970s.
At the age of 70, he used his savings and pension funds to buy the company he loved so much. He turned the company into a giant refined oil business with two main branches in Krugersdorp as well as others in Durban, PE, Virginia and Cape Town.
He will be remembered as a capable, skilled businessman, as well as a loving and fair father and grandfather.
