Randburg SPCA held this well-initiated event filled with an assortment of delicious foods, an array of crafts for sale and a selection of local businesses at their annual Winter Market on July 2.
Many community members arrived at this fun market with their families. With a jumping castle for the children and a wide selection of interesting stands for the adults to check out, the market accommodated people of all ages.
Maria Watson makes jewellery as a hobby and supported the market as it was for a good cause and was well attended by people. “My mother, who is 84 and I am 62, have done this for 16 years and we try to keep up with the times by using the internet for inspiration.”
Ally Aylott from The Grumble Soap Co explained that she had two pugs at home and they inspired the start of her small business. “While my products are for humans, my pugs were my inspiration, and they still are. The name of my company ‘The Grumble Soap Co’ is a nod toward the plural version of a group of pugs.”
She added that she stumbled across the concept of making soap through YouTube and has been doing this for three or four years.
Margret Ayers from Paws Me Pleasure revealed that she made dog treats and offered a variety of flavours such as peanut butter, pumpkin and chicken liver. Felicity Purdon from Flea’s Pet Products shared that she had cat nip pillows which came in all shapes, sizes and some custom made and were a ‘huge hit’, as well as the ‘popular’ snuffle mats and balls.
Brakenjas owners Martin Oberholzer and Erin Marais ran a stall that sold luxury dog coats. “Our coats are made from Tshwe Tshwe and Mongolian fleece,” said Oberholzer.
Andrea Sanderson, owner of Shoe Box Shoe Toys shared that she made crochet toys. “I’ve got matchboxes that are decorated and very often people will bring me a pack and say, ‘Can you make a little toy for me?’ and I will commission from that.”
Faatima Bismilla from Paws Galaxy SA shared that her business specialised in sterling silver jewellery and imported some while others were local. “Our main speciality is animal shapes sterling jewellery and they are all handmade, so cats, dogs, different dog breeds, literally all handcrafted.”
