Following the sad news concerning residents that had been left homeless after the disastrous floods that occurred in KwaZulu-Natal around the month of April, numerous organisations and citizens around the country provided assistance through various means.

The principal of Spark Schools Ferndale, Lezanne Jacobs, explained this disaster had left 461 people dead, 80 missing and over 17 000 homes had been affected and 6 278 people had been left homeless. “At least 7 000 people are living in shelters after their homes were destroyed by mudslides and gushing storm water.”

The learners, teachers and parents of Spark Schools Ferndale collected items which included food, clothing, blankets and water to donate to victims of the floods in KZN.

“After a conversation with one of our teachers whose family was deeply affected by the floods, we decided to ask our school family to donate what they could.”
She shared that those who did not have anything of monetary value to offer were encouraged to create cards or write letters of encouragement to those affected.

Jacobs added that they aimed to embody their school’s core values [service, persistence, achievement, responsibility and kindness] and felt it was important to show service and kindness to their greater community.

“A volunteer from Westville (KZN) has delivered Spark Ferndale’s bags of collected flood relief to Durban and surrounding areas.”

Jacobs revealed that the KZN government had estimated the cost of rebuilding the province to be at least R25 billion.
