Young artist uses his hobby as an outlet for his emotions

Drawing helps a Cosmo City young man deal with mood swings and stay away from illicit activities.

A young man from Kya Sands grew up with a passion for art.

Melani Loro (19), who took a gap year after high school, spends his time sketching and learning about the entrepreneurial world.

Loro knows not all enthusiastic drawers go on to become professional artists, and he considers his drawing to be a hobby.

“I love drawing but [I am] not taking it as a career path since I have other plans for my future. I just love drawing in my spare time. I randomly draw people I get to see on social media, cartoons, or my friends. I am considering studying actuarial science,” Loro said.

He explained that he uses drawing as an outlet for his emotions. “I love that it keeps me away from danger such as doing drugs and gangsters. And instead of unleashing my mood swings onto others, I express them through my drawing and that eventually excites me.”

Loro takes entrepreneurial skill development classes in Cosmo City. “With the high rate of youth unemployment in South Africa, a lot of graduates are not guaranteed work even when they are finished with their studies, I believe one should acquire a skill in the entrepreneurial space in case life doesn’t go as we plan and start producing jobs instead.”
