Local school learners elected as Joburg Student Council

The City of Johannesburg welcomes two learners as part of their youth empowerment council.

The City of Johannesburg has elected two St Stithians College learners to the Joburg Student Council.
Nitara Moodley was elected as the Junior Speaker and Fletcher Brown was elected as the Chair of Chairs.

The council is made up of more than 100 students of 60 different schools throughout the city. The student council’s mission is to be the voice of the city’s youth, and raise challenges and potential ideas that are unique to high school learners. Additionally, the student council gets to know about the local government, from how political decisions are handled and who is responsible for what.

St Stithians College has a leadership programme that is aimed at developing future serving leaders who are on a journey of self-discovery of their gifts and talents to appreciate good values in themselves and others.

TC Nkosi-Mnanzana, deputy head of student affairs at St Stithians Girls’ College said Nitara had served as a Student Representative in Grade 9 and had shown to be an exemplary leader to her peers. “Her recent election as the Junior Speaker of Council has been celebrated by all members of the Saints community, including our alumnae.”

Nitara said, “I have the opportunity to make a difference, the chance to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others. This opportunity will allow me to touch the hearts and minds of many communities and create a positive change together with my fellow councillors.”

As the Chair of Chairs, Fletcher said this opportunity allowed him to be a representative for the youth in Joburg and granted him the privilege to work with the Executive Committee and other councillors. “I look forward to working with the Junior MMCs to push for their projects to succeed and thrive. It means so much for me to be given the opportunity to make a difference,” he said.

Luke Pearson, the director of leadership at St Stithians Boys’ College said Fletcher’s passion for youth governance and utilisation of his talents to develop those around him, attributed to him being elected for this role. ”The college wishes him all the best with this exciting venture.”
