4 reasons why you should read – Friends of Olivedale Library

Your vocabulary and knowledge-base are increased even by reading fiction books.

Whether its learning about the depths of the ocean, conquering dragons with a host of noble knights, learning about history and real people, or enjoying a romantic story, reading books can take your imagination to a whole new world.

The Olivedale Library has opened its doors again after three months of closure, and now is as good a time as any to start reading.

Friends of Olivedale Library (Fools) is a volunteer group that regularly supplies the library, neighbouring libraries, schools and charities with brand new books.

It also has a book store at Olivedale Library, where it can raise funds and take donations of books that are to be resold.

Needless to say, the group is a great proponent of reading and told the Randburg Sun about the following four reasons why one should read:

  • Reading expands your horizons

In reading, your vocabulary and knowledge of how things work, increases. Fiction as well as non-fiction are beneficial in this regard.

  • It activates your imagination

Though some books have illustrations, most do not, and the reader has the opportunity to create in their minds pictures of how people, objects and places should appear.

  • It is not the same as reading online

Aside from keeping your eyes healthy by cutting screen time, reading from a paper book is a different experience from reading online. This is hard to describe, but every avid reader can attest that there is something more intimate and stimulating about reading from a book.

  • You cannot always be online

Whether for entertainment or education, reading can help you pass the time when there is no access to the internet. Save some data and ignore the distractions of a phone screen. Enjoy a book.
