Motorists are encouraged to remain vigilant when travelling along the N1 Highway between Malibongwe and William Nicol drives following a concerning number of hijackings involving suspects impersonating police officers.
According to a statement by Randburg Police Station spokesperson Captain Makgowanyana Maja, on behalf of Station Commander Brigadier Michelle Jones, the Randburg policing precinct has noted a number of incidents involving two to four suspects using vehicles with a blue light.
“Victims are held against their will and dropped off in different areas around Gauteng.”
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and adhere to the following safety tips:
- Do not stop for anyone if you suspect that the person might not be a legitimate police officer. Drive to the nearest police station, shopping complex or any other busy area.
- Do not drive to your residential area.
- Do not stop at a deserted spot or area to talk on your phone or relieve yourself.
- Always keep your windows closed.
- If someone tries to force you off of the road, do not panic; instead, blow your horn constantly to draw attention.
- In addition to the above, be aware of the theft from motor vehicles, especially Volkswagen Polo headlights, a trend which has seemingly begun resurfacing.
- Make sure you park your vehicle in a visible area or where there are car guards or a locked place.
