Burst water pipe running for five months and counting after being reported

Joburg Water has apparently not attended to the pipe burst since January.

A burst water pipe has been running for more than five months and residents are at their wits’ end.

Water has built up in a little dam next to Aureole Avenue, Northgate, and overflows to run into the road regularly.

Resident Neels Olivier, who is also caretaker of the neighbouring Bavitana Complex, has been logging faults and sending emails to Joburg Water since January.

“We received a reference number back then, but five months later I have yet to see them come help,” he said.

“The water has not damaged our property wall yet, but it is such a waste and has caused so much damage to the road. We had a plumber come look and they said they cannot work on a municipal pipe. They also reported it to Joburg Water.”

Joburg Water spokesperson Puleng Mopeli told Randburg Sun that she and the entity’s acting manager, Seipati Nyawuza, were following up on the matter.

Ward 134 councillor Devon Steenkamp has also escalated the issue with the utility.

However, he said he was notified of the matter only months later, when the Randburg Sun brought it to his attention, and he urged residents to report issues to him shortly after receiving no satisfaction from the City.

“If it was brought to my attention I could have assisted in escalating the matter to have the issue resolved sooner,” he added.
