UJ hockey players assist local NPO

Before the start of the outdoor hockey season, UJ hockey’s premier men’s side headed out to get their hands dirty with paint and varnish at a local NPO.

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) senior men’s hockey team started the season with community work at a non-profit organisation on a rainy April 10.

Mother of Peace is based in North Riding where young children up to 18 years old reside and are cared for by foster mothers.
The players got to work with sanding down walls and doors, and then painting them. The facility’s Wendy houses were also varnished by the players and they had assistance from the children at the organisation.

One of the foster mothers at the facility Dipuo Mogotsi has been at Mother of Peace since 2005 and said there were a number of items needed for their children.
“Since we act as the parents for these children, there a lot of things we need. We bath and eat every day. We really need food, toiletries and cleaning items. The children eat pap, porridge and vegetables. We are just really in need of basic items.

“We need to have parts of the building fixed, the children sometimes break things so there are some things that need fixing. We do sometimes also have issues with the electricity.”
Fourth-year education student and UJ hockey player Andile Ndlovu said there was a great significance in assisting the community as a team. “We’ve come to help and to give back to the community. We have received so much from UJ and from other people, so we want to give back to help others.

“From these experiences in community outreach and giving back, we also bond as a team. We laugh and get to know each other better, and hope that we can take that bond onto the field.”
Ndlovu added that they were looking out for other organisations in the community where they could assist and give back.
