Shooting at Summerfields Centre

The suspects dropped a gun and cellphone while fleeing the armed robbery and shooting.

At least two suspects are believed to have been shot during an armed robbery and shooting at Summerfields Centre on May 14.

The Honeydew Community Policing Forum received a call at about 19:00 on the day from residents saying PnP Liquor was being robbed.

“We immediately notified security companies and SAPS of this,” said the forum’s public relations officer Michael Steyn.

“At the same time, EC Security received a panic signal from them and responded. As they arrived, they were shot at by the suspects. The security officer shot back at them possible hitting two suspects.”

The suspects fled the scene but dropped a firearm and cell phone.

Some of the alcohol they took was also left behind.

The forum’s victim support group was on scene to offer trauma counselling to the staff of the store.

A statement from the centre’s management said centre security and PnP store security had alerted surrounding complexes and security companies, and within minutes help had arrived.

“The incredibly quick, professional response by all, including a team of paramedics, resulted in no physical injuries of any staff or customers and very little was taken from the store,” the statement read.

“Our centre prides itself on our comprehensive security measures and while opportunists are prevalent everywhere, we are appreciative of the assistance from centre security and from the surrounding community we serve.”

Honeydew police spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan confirmed the matter was being investigated but said the investigation was at a sensitive stage so there was not much he could say about it.
