On May 9, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) operations officers and tariff wardens carried out a Buya Mthetho [bring back the law] directory drill in Delta Park, Randburg.

This emerged after officers received a number of complaints regarding street vending in Delta Park from the councillor and locals living in the area.

Following a statement issued by the JMPD’s Communications Unit, it states that no person shall be allowed to follow through with the business of trading informally at a place which has been declared by the Council as a place where informal trade is prohibited.

The JMPD spokesperson, Xolani Fihla, said “An authorised official may remove and impound any property of an informal trader which he or she reasonably suspects is being used or which is intended to be used or has been used for or in connection with informal trading and is found at a place where informal trading is restricted or prohibited.”
