Seren House Cottage School cares for animals

The school collected items and donated them to the Community Led Animal Welfare in Roodepoort.

Amid all the excitement of a new year with new work and new teachers, learners from Seren House Cottage School have put much effort to support those less fortunate.

The school’s learners collected dog food, bedding, toys and treats for Community Led Animal Welfare (Claw) in Roodepoort. During the last week of the first term, the head prefects from both the middle campus and senior campus delivered a load of donations to the organisation.
Every term the school supports a different charity and encourages the school community to support those charities in any way they can.

The School Representative Council (SRC) chose Claw because its needs extended beyond the usual supplies and the SRC could provide a list that everyone could use. “Every term our students and parents really surprise us with their generosity and care,” said one of the teachers and co-ordinator Simone Stenemann.
The head prefects took everything through to Claw and were given a tour of the facility to see what Claw does. Primarily an animal hospital, it is completely off the grid and relies on solar panels and government-delivered water.

“They really appreciated the fact that the students thought of them because they are often overlooked being so far out and not as sophisticated as some of the other animal charities. The donations will really help,” said Stenemann.

While many of the learners participated in the charity drive, one group of caring Grade 10s lived out this ideal with their own special project. Kylie Bosman, Crystal Madanire, Dhanyal Naicker, Heavyn Naidoo, Kyrah Ploker and Mohammed Bux decided that the Seren House school dogs Nala and Teddy could also do with a bit of spoiling and a good wash. Between themselves, they raised the money and organised Smart Pets Mobile Grooming to come and give the dogs a full wash and groom. They waited patiently with each dog ensuring they were comfortable and not scared of the sudden fuss.
