Puppies being sold on the side of the road

Buying these animals to rescue them only perpetuates the problem, says Randburg SPCA.

The Randburg SPCA has informed residents what they should do when they see puppies or other pets being sold in a public space or on the side of the road.

This follows an incident where a community member had an altercation with people selling puppies outside the entrance of a shopping centre in Honeydew.

Inspector Shiven Bodasing said this is a contravention of the City of Johannesburg public health by-laws as well as by-laws pertaining to dogs and cats.

ā€œWhere members of the public witness animals being sold on the side of the road, they are advised to phone 10111, as the police would be in a position to send out officers and a vehicle faster when the call is received by 10111,ā€ he said.

ā€œThe Metro police must be phoned as well on 011 262 6189 (Region E) ā€¦ The SPCA can assist in the impounding of the animals.ā€

Bodasing said no member of the public should offer sellers money in an attempt to rescue the animals.

ā€œThis does not rescue the animal but creates a business model and is exactly what the puppy sellers are bargaining on, this perpetuates the cycle and it will result in more animals being sold. The description of the seller should be carefully and accurately reported to the authorities in order to enable them to react appropriately.ā€
